One American's Obsession With Malaysia
I'm Scott — a healthcare IT professional from San Diego who got deeply into Malaysia travel the way most people get into something: one good trip that showed me how much more there was to see. The food in George Town was the entry point. The Kinabatangan River at dawn was the hook. Mulu's bat exodus at dusk was the thing I couldn't explain to people until I'd built a site around explaining it.
Travel has always been my escape from the rat race — and honestly, I enjoy the planning almost as much as being there. Researching destinations, mapping routes, finding that one hawker stall that justifies an entire trip. Malaysia caught me off guard with how much it has going on simultaneously — world-class food culture in Penang and Ipoh, colonial heritage in George Town and Malacca, the best accessible wildlife in Southeast Asia in Borneo, caves that reset your sense of scale at Mulu, dive sites that rival Thailand at a fraction of the cost.
I've traveled from KL and Penang through the Cameron Highlands and down to Malacca, then into Sabah and Sarawak — the Kinabatangan River, Sepilok, Bako National Park, and eventually Mulu. Every price on this site is what I actually paid. Every restaurant recommendation is somewhere I sat down and ate. Every hotel comparison reflects what I found when I was booking with real money.
I'm not a travel blogger. I work in healthcare IT. But Malaysia kept pulling me back, and I eventually built the resource I wished had existed when I started — honest prices in MYR and USD, transport logistics that actually work, and an AI trip planner trained on real Malaysia knowledge rather than recycled content. This is the site I wanted in 2003. It just took 20 years and a lot of char kway teow to figure out how to build it.
Healthcare IT professional by day, Malaysia travel obsessive by every other waking moment. Based in San Diego, CA. Got hooked on Malaysia's food-heritage-wildlife combination and built the guide I wished existed. 40+ countries traveled but Malaysia occupies a disproportionate amount of mental space.
What You'll Never Find Here
I built this site because I got tired of Malaysia travel content that's secretly a press trip recap or a sponsored hotel review dressed up as honest advice. Discover Malaysia exists because I wanted the resource I wished I had when I was planning my first serious Malaysia trip — real local knowledge, honest prices, and content from someone who's actually been there.
